Choti Diwali, also known as Naraka Chaturdashi or Kali Chaudas, is the Hindu festival, celebrated on the fourteenth day in the month of Kartik (usually occurring in October or November).

It is the second day of the five-day-long Diwali celebrations, the grandest Hindu festival that begins with Dhanteras, (the day on which Lord Kubera, and Dhanvantari are worshipped) and concludes with Bhai Dooj (the day celebrating the sibling bond as Krishna visits his sister Subhadra after killing the demon king).

Diwali celebrates the win of good over evil, light over darkness, wisdom over ignorance, and Rama over Ravana, marking the return of Rama with his wife Sita and brother Lakshman to Ayodhya after a 14-year-long exile.

Tale Behind Choti Diwali (Narak Chaturdashi)

Popularly known as Choti Diwali, Narak Chaturdashi commemorates the victory of Lord Krishna over the demon king of Pragjyotishpur, Narakasura. This demon had made 16,000 beautiful maidens his captives using his powers and his defeat by lord Krishna led to their liberation from his imprisonment.

Annually celebrated with full fervour and unparalleled zeal after Dhanteras, Narak Chaturdashi falls on the Chaturdashi tithi of Kartik Krishna Paksha. After the triumph of Krishna & these maidens were socially ostracized due to their time spent in a demon’s captivity. Unaccepted by society, they chose their savior, Lord Krishna, as their protector and life partner and married him.
