It starts around July and lasts till August as per the Georgian calendar, though the exact starting and ending dates keep on changing every year.
This auspicious month is dedicated to the worship of lord Shiva and makes a month-long celebration with special pujas happening throughout the season.
This blog will explore the significance of Shravan month, its important dates, and the vidhi to do puja in this holy month.
Significance Of Shravan (Sawan Month)
In the auspicious month of Shravan (Sawan), devotees perform various rituals, do Monday fasts, pray for the fulfillment of their desires, and conduct pujas to get the blessing of lord Shiva. In this month dedicated to lord Shiva, the rains are considered to be the blessings of Shiva and symbolize the renewal of life.
Hindu scriptures say that it is the month of Shravan during which Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean) by deities and demons took place. It is the season in which lord Shiva saved the world from destruction by consuming the poison (halahal) that came out of Samudra Manthan. Shiva got a blue throat due to the poison he drank and that’s how he got the name ‘Neelkanth’.
During this auspicious season, devotees of lord Shiva go on Kanwar Yatra. They carry water from holy rivers, like the Ganges, in small pots named “kanwars” and start their foot pilgrimages to sacred temples of Lord Shiva with great devotion, singing bhajans (devotional songs) along the way.
